Local mother, Mel Briston from Baston, Lincolnshire has signed up to take on the London Landmarks Half Marathon (24 March) as part of The Children’s Trust team #TeamRyley. Mel was inspired to take part in the race after her son Ryley received brain injury rehabilitation at the charity’s specialist centre.

Taking on the 13.1 mile challenge with three of her friends, Louise, Demelza and Kirsten, #TeamRyley aim to raise £1,500.

Ryley, now aged 17, received specialist brain injury rehabilitation after he suddenly collapsed at home in May 2016. He had a brain haemorrhage caused by an arterial venous malformation (AVM) – a symptomless condition he’d had since birth. AVM is thought to occur in less than one percent of the population and as a result, Ryley was left with a severe brain injury, unable to walk, talk or feed himself.

Just six months after his injury, Ryley moved to The Children’s Trust in Surrey where he received a combination of intensive physio, speech and language, occupational therapy, aquatics, play therapy and music therapy. With enormous support and bravery, Ryley was able to return home in 2017.

Mel comments: “I’m very excited to take on this challenge with my friends and people who are as passionate about the charity as I am. The Children’s Trust has given our family invaluable support and we’ll be forever grateful for how the staff helped Ryley with his recovery.”

Prior to his haemorrhage, football and running were a big part of Ryley’s life. In fact, the week before he collapsed he qualified top of his age group in the county championships. Yet, despite the unimaginable happening, Ryley wasn’t going to let anything get him down.

Mel adds: “I’m so proud of Ryley’s strength and determination. We’re planning to get him to the end of the line so he can cross the finish line with us too!”
